ABOUT ABOUT

Purchased with donations made in celebration of William J. Chiego’s 20 years as Director, Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié’s Gloria Victis! commemorates France’s crushing loss in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. June Hargrove, Professor of Nineteenth-Century European Painting and Sculpture, University of Maryland, discusses Mercíe’s heralded career in the context of the many monuments made after the war, comparing his memorial to those of contemporaries, including Auguste Rodin, Alexandre Falguière, and Louis-Ernest Barrias.

Hargrove received the Chevalier of the Order of the Arts and Letters from the French Government and was awarded the 2013 Distinguished Teacher of Art History Award by the College Art Association for her scholarship and passion for teaching. This lecture is a program of the Louis A. and Frances B. Wagner Lecture Series.
